The Grade 7 Social Media Takeover is a result of a collaborative partnership between Middle School English teachers and the ISB Marketing team. The project is an enhanced unit in which students have learned about the important structures and writing for authentic audiences - resulting in the chance to be published live on the school’s website and through social media channels.
A New Beginning
Written by Cason in collaboration with ISB Marketing & Communications
Every great school has a great leader. International School Bangkok (ISB) is no exception. Dr. Sascha Heckmann recently became the Head of School after Dr. Andrew Davies’ retirement. Despite only being in the position for 6 months, Dr. Heckmann has already made a big impact on the school by making our school a better place, day by day.
Community is Everything
Like all great leaders, Dr. Heckmann had a beginning. He is the product of teachers who knew he was capable and could do great things. None of these teachers helped shape him more than his third-grade teacher, Mrs. Sweeton, who taught him how to speak English. Her teaching him English helped him become more confident in school. Another great teacher, Mr. Haggard was one of Dr. Heckmann’s tenth-grade teachers who taught him how to write using effective strategies. With this knowledge, he later wrote a book called Personalized Learning in a PLC at Work.
Transition and Settling In
Moving to a new school can be a daunting experience, especially for kids. However, Dr. Heckmann’s transition to ISB can only be described as perfect and lovely. Dr. Heckmann, who has two children, a daughter who is in ninth grade and a son in sixth grade, has said that their experience coming to ISB has meant friendship and a sense of home. His kids have enjoyed getting to know fellow students and have had a great time making new friends that will last a lifetime. Dr. Heckmann also has a wife who teaches eighth-grade science and says she has enjoyed her time getting to know the students and staff members.
Impacts and Beliefs
Despite only being at ISB for six months, Dr. Heckmann has plans that will make the school a better place for all staff, students, and parents. For example, Dr. Heckmann says that one of his main objectives is to give kids as many choices as possible and one of his many ways of achieving this goal is adding the AP capstone diploma to the high school that will allow students more opportunities to grow their learning and gain college credit.
What Parents Should Know
Dr. Heckmann believes that ISB is a place where kids flourish, feel supported, and let them be the best person they can be. He believes that all students deserve a world-class education and deserve to have caring and wonderful teachers to let them gain as much knowledge as they can.
As Dr. Heckmann said, he wants a “great school where you can deeply invest in the academics, arts, sports, and service. Also, one that provides the opportunities that were provided to him.”
