The Grade 7 Social Media Takeover is a result of a collaborative partnership between Middle School English teachers and the ISB Marketing team. The project is an enhanced unit in which students have learned about the important structures and writing for authentic audiences - resulting in the chance to be published live on the school’s website and through social media channels.
The Value of Athletics at ISB
Written by Sunwoo in collaboration with ISB Marketing & Communications
As a leading institution [among] the schools in Bangkok, we encourage students to show their athleticism in one of the many different athletics programs at International School Bangkok (ISB). ISB allows students to show their passion and talent in all kinds of sports. ISB encourages students to try new sports and show their athleticism. ISB has many successful athletics programs for students to try. This gives them opportunities to try new sports with friends.
The Importance of Commitment and Passion in Sports
Commitment and Passion are key values in sports. Neil, a talented Varsity Tennis player in middle school, says that “One of the main attributes you need to show to be in these prestigious teams is commitment. Coaches prefer when players are committed to the sport and it is high on their priority list. Additionally, passion is another important component as you need to feel meaning for what you are doing.” When Neil made Varsity, the coaches told him that he could not play in big tournaments such as IASAS due to age restrictions. This did not affect Neil. He wanted to improve and stayed committed throughout the whole season.
Kent, an eighth grader at ISB, is another great example of a committed player. He has a great passion towards Volleyball. Kent tried out for Varsity Volleyball in eighth grade. He could not make the team but did not quit. Later, he tried out for Junior Varsity Volleyball and made the team. This shows that Kent has great commitment, passion, and dedication to Volleyball. Furthermore, it’s important to realize that these values are not only crucial to sports but also significant to people’s lives as they grow up. Sports are an effective way to enhance and strengthen these values.
The Power of Responsibility
Making it into Varsity does not mean you can relax. Being in Varsity takes a lot of responsibility. Especially if you are [a] captain, this is because Varsity represents the top team in school. Fooling around or making a bad reputation to the team can make coaches cut players off from the team. You have to show good sportsmanship after every game and support your teammates consistently. Additionally, attending practices can be crucial to coaches, as practices can make you improve as a player and a person. Skipping practices on purpose can be disrespectful and can make coaches think that you have no respect and responsibility. You need responsibility by making time to attend practices and games. According to Dongwan, a Junior Varsity Rugby player, “Varsity there is definitely more responsibility because there are more eyes on you from the school to make you a leader.”
Benefits to Athletics
Athletics at ISB, which is not always competitive, offers many different programs that students can join. One program is Panther Sports. They teach many different sports with people around your age group. One thing to watch out for is that when two sports are active in a season, the Panther program will not be coaching those two sports. This is because the times may collide or students have to rest for the seasonal sports. Programs that are not seasonal sports can be joined by anyone. You can sign up with your friends and learn new sports together. It does not always have to be strict and competitive. If you want to have a fun time with friends, try new athletics programs at ISB.
